PARALLELS
Two scales are called eachothers parallel, when they:
- are derived from eachother
- consist of the same tones
- have the same number of accidentals
When we are looking for the parallel of the scale of C-major, this is the natural scale,
we will find A-minor. Remember the names of the scales: C & A !!
The major scale, C-major, lies up and the minor scale, A-minor, lies beneath it.
The interval between C and A is a MINOR THIRD.
We can also say: the minor scale starts on the 6th tone of the major scale.
What is the parallel of D-major? Go down a minor third from D. There you find B.
The parallel of D-major is B-minor.
What is the parallel of G-minor? Now you go UP a minor third and there you find B
.
So the parallel of G-minor is B
-major.
What is the parallel of C-minor? We go UP again and a minor third up there is E
The parallel of C-minor is E
-major.
When you want to be sure about finding a correct minor or major third, always use the scedule below
and learn by heart: a minor third is two whole tones and: a minor third is one tone and a half.
You can use the example of the natural scale for finding all other major scales.
